A Simple Guide to Australian Road Rules for Visitors

Your quick and easy guide to driving safely and confidently in Australia.

Planning an Aussie road trip is exciting. The freedom of the open road is the best way to see this massive country. But if you’re visiting from overseas or it’s your first time hiring a car, understanding the road rules can feel a bit daunting.

As your 100% Aussie-owned local experts, we’ve put together a simple, no-nonsense guide. These are the key rules you actually need to know for a safe and stress-free journey.

The Top 5 Must-Know Rules for Driving in Australia

1. Drive on the LEFT

This is the most important rule of all. In Australia, we drive on the left-hand side of the road, and the steering wheel is on the right-hand side of the car. If you’re used to driving on the right, take a few quiet laps around the depot to get the feel of it before hitting the main road.

2. Speed Limits are Strictly Enforced

Unlike in some other countries, speed limits in Australia are not “suggestions”—they are strict maximums. Exceeding the limit, even by a small amount, can result in very heavy fines and demerit points. Always look for the round, red-and-white speed signs, especially in school zones (often 40km/h) and roadwork areas.

3. No Touching Your Mobile Phone

This is another rule with severe penalties. It is illegal to hold or touch your phone at all while driving. This includes texting, checking maps, or taking a call (even on speakerphone). You must use a proper, hands-free cradle or connect your phone via Bluetooth to the car’s system.

4. How to Use Roundabouts

Roundabouts are very common in Australia. The rule is simple: always give way to any vehicle already in the roundabout (coming from your right). When you enter, use your indicator if you plan to turn right or left.

5. Watch for Wildlife (Especially at Dawn & Dusk)

This is a critical tip for any Aussie road trip. Kangaroos, wallabies, and other wildlife are most active in the low-light hours of dawn and dusk. Be extra vigilant when driving on regional or country roads during these times.

Tips for Driving in Our Major Cities

While the main rules are national, each city has its own personality. Our e-Tag system handles all toll roads for you, but here’s what else to watch for.

  • Melbourne: The CBD is famous for its “Hook Turns,” where you must turn right from the left lane to avoid blocking trams. It’s unique, so follow the signs. If you’re sticking to the freeways with your car hire from Melbourne Airport, you’ll avoid them.
  • Sydney: Sydney is known for its complex network of toll roads and tunnels. A car hire from Sydney Airport gives you easy access to the main motorways, and our e-Tag system makes paying for tolls automatic.
  • Brisbane: Brisbane’s traffic flows well, but is built around many bridges and tunnels. Using a GPS with your car hire from Brisbane Airport is a great way to ensure you’re in the correct lane for your exit.
  • Gold Coast: When driving your car hire Gold Coast, be very mindful of the G:link tram. Always stay in the marked car lanes and only cross the tram tracks at designated intersections.
  • Logan: As a major hub between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, the motorways can be busy. A Logan car hire is perfect for exploring the local suburbs and regional parks at your own pace.

Your Most Important Car Hire Rule: Sealed Roads Only

Finally, there’s one key rule for your car hire agreement: you must stay on sealed, paved surfaces. Driving our vehicles on unsealed roads, dirt tracks, or beaches is not permitted. This is a standard condition, as it can cause damage not covered by your liability waiver

Don’t worry—all major tourist routes and highways are fully sealed.

By keeping these simple rules in mind, you’re all set for a safe and incredible Australian adventure.
