A car rental Security Deposit is a simple financial safeguard that gives us both peace of mind while you’re out on the road. It helps cover the unexpected, like accidental damage or minor incidental costs, so you can just focus on enjoying the drive.
Types of Security Deposits
- General Security Deposit: Covers standard incidentals like tolls, missing fuel or late returns.
- Damage Liability: Specifically allocated just in case the vehicle has a scrape or bump during your trip.
Deposit Amounts
How much you need to set aside depends on a few easy factors:
- Vehicle type: Larger or premium vehicles generally require a slightly higher Security Deposit.
- Driver’s age and experience: Younger or less experienced drivers may have different deposit requirements.
- Location: Amounts can vary slightly depending on the branch you are picking up from.
Typical deposit ranges usually sit between $100 and $1,000, depending on the car you choose on ours.
Payment Methods & Requirements
- Credit and Debit Cards: Credit cards are the easiest and most widely accepted way to secure your deposit. We also warmly welcome debit cards, though a few extra simple requirements may apply.
- Sufficient Funds: Just ensure your nominated card has enough available funds to cover the amount.
- The Process: When you pick up the car, we will process your Security Deposit as a pending transaction. This isn’t a direct charge, and the funds never actually leave your account. It simply secures the amount while you travel.
Security Deposit Refunds
Refund Policies
- Full Refund: If you bring the car back in great shape with no extra charges pending, the transaction simply clears.
- Partial Refund: If there are minor hiccups like missing fuel or new damage, we will simply use the deposit to balance those costs.
Tips for a Smooth, Full Refund
- Vehicle condition: Enjoy the car, but try to keep it in the same good condition you found it in.
- Fuel: Simply top up the tank before dropping it off to avoid any handy refuelling costs.
- Fees: Taking care of any parking tickets, tolls or late extensions along the way keeps the handover completely hassle-free.
Pending Transactions Explained
How Long Do They Last?
When you swipe your card at the counter, we secure your Security Deposit as a pending transaction. Once you return the vehicle, we immediately release that transaction on our end.
The time it takes for your bank to fully clear the pending status and update your available balance can vary, but it usually takes just a few days to a week.
Damage Liability and Excess Fees
- Premium Protection: This is an optional level of cover that significantly reduces your financial responsibility if the unexpected happens. By choosing Premium Protection when booking, your required Security Deposit is often much lower.
- Excess Fee: If you stick with Standard Liability and the car gets damaged, the standard excess fee applies. For convenience, this can be managed directly through your Security Deposit.
