Hope Built Brick by Brick: Changing Lives in Cambodia

The Gubecka Family Holdings Charity, in partnership with Alpha Car Hire’s community initiative, is pleased to announce the successful completion of a project that has profoundly improved the quality of life for a family in rural Cambodia. Thanks to the combined generosity of our donors and the collaborative efforts with the Cambodia Clean Water & Toilet Project, a wheelchair-accessible washroom and toilet have been constructed for Srey, a 31-year-old woman.

Srey, confined to a wheelchair since the age of six due to an undiagnosed medical condition, had endured the indignity of lacking basic sanitation. The absence of proper facilities presented a significant challenge to her daily life.
The newly constructed washroom provides Srey and her family with a clean, private, and accessible space, restoring a sense of dignity.

The project required meticulous planning and execution:

1. Initial Assessment and Site Selection: A meeting was held with Srey’s family to assess their needs and determine the optimal location for the washroom, ensuring it was at least 20 meters from any water source.

2. Manual Excavation and Foundation Preparation: The site was manually excavated, and pipes were positioned. Brickwork footings were prepared to create a stable base.

3. Brickwork Construction: Rows of bricks were laid to create a “wet area” base, enabling the structure to function as both a toilet and washroom.

4. Concrete Flooring and Rendering: A concrete floor was poured, and the brickwork was rendered to create a smooth, durable surface.

5. Design for Dual Functionality & Women’s Safety: The washroom was designed to double as a washing area, providing crucial privacy and safety for women and children who often lack such facilities. This multi-purpose design was prioritised to address the specific needs of the women in the family.

6. Superstructure Construction: Walls and a roof were constructed using durable ‘colorbond’ style steel sheets. A pre-made steel-framed door was installed for longevity and security.

7. Sustainable Septic System Installation: A sustainable septic tank system was installed to ensure proper sanitation and environmental responsibility.

8. Hygiene Reinforcement: During the handover, the importance of handwashing was emphasised, and a supply of soap was provided.

9. Completed Washroom: The finished installation provides a safe and accessible washroom for Srey and her family.
