You can never go wrong with an outdoor adventure. If you’re looking for something new to try, then head down to Onkaparinga River National Park. There are plenty of activities you and your family can enjoy. Onkaparinga River Park is located 35km south of Adelaide and offers a diverse range of trails which will lead you to magnificent views from cliff tops or down to waterholes and rock pools. Wherever you go, be greeted by native wildlife such as koalas, kangaroos, possums, echidnas and birds.
Onkaparinga Recreation Park
In the Onkaparinga Recreation Park, you will find wetland ponds and flood plains which have been created from the river spilling onto the plains. You will come across many rare native plants and animal species in the area. Why not enjoy fishing in the river or enjoy a walk along the wetland boardwalk or a bike ride along the shared trails.
Go on a hike
Walks in the park range from easy to more challenging hikes and vary in length from 30 minutes to 2 hours. The Pingle Farm Trail takes you past a ruined farmhouse as well as the Encounter Marine Park Sanctuary. Discover the stories of the river, wetlands, water and traditional landowners through the artwork of Paul Herzich along the Noarlunga Downs Wetland Trail.
Find the punchbowl
Onkaparinga has a secret: The Punchbowl is a perfect place to get away and relax. A rock pool surrounded by rugged cliffs and an overhanging rock formation. Above the Punchbowl is a lookout where you can take in the spectacular views looking directly into the Onkaparinga Gorge. Walk the gentle gradient 2km return trail, why not stop at the halfway resting spot and take in the natural surrounds along the way.
Scenic views
Take a short hike to see the rocky outcrops and the river flowing through the Onkaparinga Gorge from the Sundews lookout. Sundews Ridge hike is a moderate loop trail that runs along the ridge top. Why not challenge yourself and take the Gorge Hike from the Sundews lookout, experience the river while taking in the surrounds of plants and animals that live in the area. The Gorge hike follows the river downstream before returning up the steep slopes to the top of the ridge.
