Wet Weather Driving: How to Stay Safe When the Skies Open Up

Australia is famous for sunshine, but

when it rains here, it pours.

One minute you are cruising down the highway, and the next, you can barely see the bonnet of your car. Autumn often brings these sudden, heavy downpours that can catch even experienced drivers off guard.

Driving in the rain requires a completely different mindset. It’s not just about slowing down; it’s about visibility and grip.

Here is how to handle the conditions and arrive safely.

1. Lights On (But Not High Beams)

As soon as the wipers go on, your lights should go on.

It’s not just about you seeing the road; it’s about other cars seeing you. A silver or white car can vanish in the spray of a truck. Turn your low beams on to activate your tail lights.

Pro Tip: Avoid high beams in heavy rain. The bright light reflects off the water droplets and dazzles you, actually making it harder to see.

2. Kill the Cruise Control

This is the most common mistake drivers make.

When the road is wet, your tyres are fighting for grip. If you hit a deep puddle while Cruise Control is on, your car will try to maintain speed just as it loses traction. This is a recipe for hydroplaning (aquaplaning).

Keep full control of the throttle with your foot so you can feel the road surface.

3. Double Your Distance

In dry conditions, the “3-second gap” is the rule. In the wet, make it six.

Wet roads double your stopping distance. If the car in front slams on its brakes, you need that extra buffer zone to react without locking up your wheels.

4. The “AC” Trick

Windows fogging up? Don’t just blast the fan. Turn on your Air Conditioning (AC), even if you have the heater on warm.

The AC acts as a dehumidifier, pulling the moisture out of the air instantly. It is the fastest way to clear a foggy windscreen and keep your vision sharp.

Safety Starts With the Car

You can be the best driver in the world, but if your tyres are bald or your wipers are streaky, you are in trouble.

Tread depth is what channels the water away and keeps you on the road. If your current daily driver has questionable tyres, don’t risk it on a long trip.

Our fleet is rigorously maintained to ensure every vehicle has deep tread and fresh wipers. A safe car rental is about more than just airbags; it’s about mechanical reliability when the weather turns bad.

Stay Safe Out There If the rain gets too heavy, pull over at a service station and wait it out. It’s better to be late than not arrive at all.

Book a reliable vehicle now and drive with confidence, whatever the weather.
