“I’m Bored!”: 4 Brisbane Day Trips to Save Your Sanity This School Holidays

We are only a few days into the school holidays, and

if you hear the words “I’m bored” one more time, you might just lose it.

Tablets and TV screens only work for so long. Eventually, you need to get the kids out of the house and burn off that energy.

The trick to surviving the school break isn’t expensive theme parks every single day; it’s knowing where to drive to find the hidden gems. Here are four boredom-busting day trips near Brisbane that are guaranteed to result in a quiet car ride home.

1. The Daisy Hill Koala Centre (Logan)

The Activity: This is one of the best free animal encounters in Queensland. You can spot koalas in the eucalyptus trees, explore the interactive centre and take a bushwalk on the paperbark trail.

The Drive: It is a super easy drive down the M1. Parking is free and plentiful. It’s perfect for a half-day trip—morning with the koalas, picnic lunch, then back home for a nap.

2. Settlement Cove Lagoon (Redcliffe)

The Activity: If you don’t want to drive all the way to the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast, Redcliffe is the answer. Settlement Cove is a massive, man-made saltwater lagoon right on the waterfront. It has shallow areas for toddlers, BBQ facilities, and it is completely free.

The Drive: Head north over the Hornibrook Bridge. It feels like a coastal getaway without the highway traffic. A spacious car hire Brisbane vehicle means you can pack the inflatables, the towels and the cricket set without squashing the kids in the back.

3. Mount Coot-tha Botanic Gardens (Toowong)

The Activity: Forget the lookout; head to the Gardens at the bottom. The “Hide ‘n’ Seek” children’s trail is brilliant for younger kids, and the Tropical Display Dome looks like something out of Jurassic Park. There is plenty of space to run around and explore.

The Drive: It is only 15 minutes from the CBD, making it the perfect “emergency exit” if the kids are climbing the walls at home.

4. Wynnum Whale Park (Wynnum)

The Activity: This is water play done right. The Wynnum Whale Park has a huge pod of spraying whales, a wading pool and a massive playground next door. It’s right on the bay, so you get the sea breeze while the kids get soaked.

Pack the Car, Save the Day

You don’t need a plane ticket to have a holiday. You just need a full tank of petrol and a destination.

If your family car is looking a bit small for all the holiday gear, upgrade your ride for the week. Book a family SUV now and turn “I’m bored” into “That was awesome.”

Good luck, parents!
