5 Weekend Getaways You Can Start Straight from Melbourne Airport

Melbourne is a fantastic city, but let’s be honest: the traffic in the CBD is a nightmare. If you are flying in for a short break, the last thing you want to do is spend an hour stuck in the Burnley Tunnel.

The smartest way to see Victoria is to bypass the city entirely.

By picking up your vehicle at the airport, you are already positioned on the ring road, ready to launch into some of the best driving country on the planet. Here are five trips that make escaping the terminal a breeze.

The Great Ocean Road (The Icon)

It’s a cliché for a reason. The winding drive from Torquay to the Twelve Apostles is world-class.

The Drive: Head west from the airport. In just over an hour, you’ll hit the coast. The road hugs the cliffs, offering incredible ocean views. It’s a drive best suited to a solid vehicle with good handling. Just remember to keep your eyes on the road, not just the view.

Yarra Valley (The Foodie Run)

Suppose your perfect weekend involves Pinot Noir and artisan cheese, head north-east. The Yarra Valley is barely an hour from the airport, but it feels like the French countryside.

The Drive: It’s an easy cruise through rolling green hills. You don’t need a massive 4WD for this one; a comfortable sedan is perfect for hopping between cellar doors and chocolateries.

Phillip Island (Wildlife & Waves)

Famous for the Penguin Parade and the Grand Prix track, this is a versatile spot. It’s got surf beaches for the summer and rugged coastlines for winter walks.

The Drive: It takes about two hours. You’ll pass through the south-eastern suburbs before hitting the bridge at San Remo. It’s a popular family route, so if you have the kids and the gear, make sure you’ve organised a larger SUV.

Mornington Peninsula (The “Other” Coast)

Locals argue this is better than the Great Ocean Road. It has calmer bay beaches on one side, wild surf on the other, and hot springs in the middle.

The Drive: Take the tollways around the city, and you’ll be there in 90 minutes. Driving through Red Hill requires navigating some winding roads, but the scenery is worth it.

Daylesford (The Chill Out)

If you simply want to disconnect, this is the spa centre of Australia. Think mineral springs, massages, and fireside dinners.

The Drive: Head north-west into the bush. It’s a relaxing 75-minute drive from the airport. It gets cold up here in winter, so a car with heated seats is a nice bonus if you can snag one.

The Logistics

Victoria is a state made for driving, but the distances can be deceptive. You need a reliable vehicle to cover the kilometres safely.

Don’t waste time organising transfers into the city just to rent a car there. Grab your car hire from Melbourne Airport as soon as you land, throw your bags in the boot, and start your holiday the minute you leave the terminal.
