The Australian Open has officially come to a close. And new champions have been crowned. Roger Federer and Caroline Wozniacki won the championships in their respective divisions.
Federer defeated Marini Cilic to win his sixth Melbourne title and 20th Grand Slam in an exciting five-set game on Sunday night. The scoreline of their match reads 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, 3-6, and 6-1.
Aside from winning the cash prize, the 36-year-old Federer also became the second oldest athlete to win the Australian Open since Ken Rosewall who won the tournament in 1972 at the age of 37.
Meanwhile, Caroline Wozniacki won the Grand Slam title for the first time in her career after defeating Simona Halep in a gruelling battle. Their scoreline reads 7-6, 3-6, and 6-4. Wozniacki’s win came after years of questioning and criticism; and with her first Grand Slam championship, she was able to put her critics to rest.
Both Federer and Wozniacki will be taking home a large sum of money and a trophy for their efforts.
