Fireplaces, Red Wine & Whales: Where to Spend the King’s Birthday Long Weekend

The June long weekend is a turning point. The last of the warm weather is officially gone, the puffer jackets are out, and winter has arrived.

But that doesn’t mean you should hibernate.

The King’s Birthday long weekend is actually one of the best times to travel. It’s the season of “cozy”—roaring fireplaces, big glasses of red wine, and crisp morning walks. It’s about comfort, not camping.

If you are looking to escape the city this June, here are three road trips that embrace the chill.

1. The Wine Run: Hunter Valley (NSW) or Barossa (SA)

The Vibe: Winter is red wine season. There is nothing better than sitting in a cellar door with a wood fire cracking in the corner, looking out over the dormant vines.

The Drive: Leave the city behind and head for the vines. In June, the Hunter Valley comes alive with the “Hunter Valley Wine & Food Festival,” offering everything from cheese tastings to burning log fires. It’s a sophisticated, relaxing weekend where the car boot is essential for bringing home a few cases of Shiraz.

2. The Migration: The Sapphire Coast (NSW)

The Vibe: You don’t need heat to enjoy the beach. June marks the start of the northern whale migration. The Humpbacks are active, and the winter air on the coast is famously clear, making for incredible viewing.

The Drive: Head south from Sydney to Eden or Merimbula. The drive down the Princes Highway is stunning. Wrap up warm, grab some fish and chips, and sit on the headland to watch the whales breach. It’s nature’s best show, and it’s completely free.

3. The “Snow Play” Dash: Corin Forest (ACT) or Mt Donna Buang (VIC)

The Vibe: You don’t have to be a hardcore skier to enjoy the snow. Sometimes, you just want to build a snowman, throw a snowball and then retreat to a hot chocolate.

The Drive: These spots are perfect for families. They are accessible, they offer tobogganing and snow play, and they don’t require the intense preparation of a full Thredbo or Perisher expedition. It’s a taste of winter wonderland without the blizzard.

Upgrade Your Weekend

Winter road trips require a different kind of vehicle. You aren’t looking for a convertible; you are looking for a cocoon.

You need heated seats to warm you up after a walk, powerful demisters to keep the view clear, and plenty of space for the thick winter coats and boots.

Our long weekend car hire options are designed for comfort. Book a premium SUV for the King’s Birthday, turn up the climate control, and enjoy the drive as much as the destination.

Stay warm!
