It is an Easter tradition as old as hot cross buns: The M1 Carpark.
Every year, thousands of Brisbanites pack their cars and head south to the Gold Coast, and every year, they all leave at exactly the same time. The result is a 70-kilometre gridlock that can turn a one-hour drive into a three-hour ordeal.
If you are heading to the coast this break, you don’t have to accept your fate. With a bit of strategy, you can dodge the worst of it.
Here is how to survive the Pacific Motorway this Easter.
The Golden Rule: Timing is Everything
The data doesn’t lie. The absolute worst times to drive south are between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM on the Thursday before Easter and between 8:00 AM and 12:00 PM on Good Friday.
If you want to win, you have to be extreme.
The Early Bird: Leave at 5:00 AM. Yes, it’s painful, but watching the sunrise over Burleigh while everyone else is stuck at Yatala is worth it.
The Night Owl: Leave after 8:00 PM on Thursday. The traffic usually clears by dinner time, giving you a smooth run.
The “Fly Direct” Cheat Code
Here is a radical thought: Don’t drive the M1 at all.
If you are visiting from interstate (or even just want to avoid the BNE-GC grind), fly directly into Gold Coast Airport (Coolangatta). You bypass the entire Brisbane bottleneck. You can step off the plane, pick up your car rental Gold Coast vehicle from our depot, and be checking into your hotel while the Brisbane drivers are still staring at brake lights near Dreamworld.
Accepting Fate? Upgrade Your Comfort
Sometimes, you just can’t avoid the traffic. If you have kids or a strict check-in time, you might get stuck in the crawl.
If you are going to be sitting in a car for two hours, make sure it’s a nice one. Doing the M1 crawl in a tiny manual hatchback with weak air-conditioning is a recipe for a family argument.
Upgrading to a larger SUV gives you better visibility, more personal space for the kids and, most importantly, powerful climate control to combat the Queensland humidity.
Check Your Tech
Before you leave the driveway, load up your maps app. Google Maps and Waze are essential for spotting accidents in real-time. Sometimes the “Service Road” (taking the exit and driving parallel to the highway) can save you twenty minutes, but only if you know exactly where to get off.
Don’t Start the Holiday Stressed
Traffic is inevitable, but misery is optional.
If you need a vehicle that can handle the highway (and keep the family comfortable), we have you sorted. Check our fleet availability and book a car that makes the journey as good as the destination.
Drive safely and watch your following distance!
