The Date Night Upgrade: 3 Drives Better Than a Set Menu

Let’s be honest: Valentine’s Day dinner is a stressful sport. You are crammed into a restaurant, shouting over the table next to you, paying double for a “special menu” you didn’t really want.

This year, ditch the chaos. The best dates are the ones where you can actually hear each other speak.

We have picked three romantic drives that get you out of the city and into the good books. Whether it is a sunset lookout or a winding coastal road, these trips are the perfect way to earn some serious brownie points.

Brisbane: Mount Glorious

The Drive: Forget the crowded Mt Coot-tha summit. Head a little further north-west to Mount Glorious. The winding road up through the rainforest is spectacular (roll the windows down for that fresh eucalyptus smell), and there are plenty of quiet cafes tucked away in the trees.

The Date: Stop at the Wivenhoe Outlook. It is generally quieter than the city lookouts and offers an incredible view over the dam. It is the perfect spot for a picnic if you want to skip the restaurant entirely.

Sydney: The Grand Pacific Drive

The Drive: It is iconic for a reason. Driving across the Sea Cliff Bridge with the ocean churning below you is about as cinematic as it gets. Head south from the Royal National Park towards Wollongong.

The Date: Pull in at the Scarborough Hotel for lunch in the beer garden overlooking the ocean, or keep driving to Austinmer Beach for a swim. It feels like a mini-holiday, even if you are just down for the afternoon.

Melbourne: The Yarra Valley Loop

The Drive: Nothing says romance like vineyards. The drive out to the Yarra Valley is easy, green and instantly relaxing. You are surrounded by rolling hills and misty vines, less than an hour from the CBD.

The Date: You don’t have to do the full wine tour. Just cruising the Black Spur Drive (technically a bit further out, but worth it) offers towering trees and dappled light that looks like a movie set. Grab a coffee in Healesville and browse the antique shops.

Upgrade Your Ride

If your current car is full of gym gear, sand, or just makes a weird noise when you turn left, maybe don’t take it on date night.

Treat yourself (and your date) to a smooth ride. Our compact SUV rental options are perfect for a couple’s getaway—they look sharp, drive smoothly, and have just enough height to make those scenic views even better.
